Counselling in schools provides a cost effective service for pupils experiencing emotional distress and/or behavioural problems. Bereavement, loss, family and peer relationship difficulties, anxiety and bullying are major issues that can lead to deterioration in a pupil’s behaviour. The effect of emotional upset experienced by children and young people often results in a change in their behaviour. When emotional distress is ignored, tension can build up resulting in pupils ‘opting out’ or becoming ‘school refusers’. Others may act out their feelings in a disruptive way. Counselling can be an effective source of support for these pupils.

FAQ's ABOUT THE SCHOOLS SERVICE:

Research has shown that counselling can:

Provide the opportunity for time to share problems and concerns in a non-judgemental setting.

  • Provide the opportunity for confidentiality which may lead to the release of long suppressed information that may be causing distress.
  • Help young people build positive self-esteem and gain insight into developing more effective relationships.

An annual evaluation is carried out by the Valley Trust. These meetings are attended by the head teacher, the link member of staff, the counsellor, the co-ordinator and a trustee. Feedback from the schools shows that the counselling service is “hugely valued”, “working very well and valued”, “a wonderful and valued service” and “a very positive addition to our school”.
